Eleanor, I feel where you're coming from but a lot of what you say makes no sense. Let's start here:

DJs who consider themselves as “REAL” DJs are the biggest amateurs and are bedroom wankers with no social skills.

The Real DJs i speak of are skilled DJs in the areas I mentioned before such as mixing, scratching, programming, crowd control etc. By default, that makes them "non amateurs".
In regards to being bedroom wankers with no social skills, i wouldn't know about all that. I'm sure "wankers" come in all sort of occupations, even yours.

if you can’t sell yourself you can only bitch about how ppl who can sell themselves can get ahead in the game.

Here's a short list of DJs off the top of the dome that not only sell themselves but have long careers, skills and more importantly respect for the art of DJing (which is the actual point of this blog)
Myself, Jazzy Jeff, JMJ, Mars, Trauma, Green Lantern,Jazzy Joyce, Envy, Qbert, Jaycee,Kid Capri.......ahhhhhh..forget it...... this could take me all day. Moving on......

fake DJs are young inexperienced DJs that get the chance to play b/c they are connected and can get a draw

Uhhhh...just wrong!! An inexperienced DJ gets gigs because the promoter or club owner can pay them a fraction of what an experienced DJ charges. PERIOD!!
A fake DJ is just what i described in the blog already. Let's continue..

for many years the house scene battered godfather djs like Paul oakenfold, franky knuckles and junior Vasquez for not being able to preform a decent mix on stage but all there studio DJ mixes were flawless and probably produced by computer or a more skilled DJ. house DJs are booked based on their music production and in many times the great DJ talents are shadowed by mediocre DJs that are great studio producers.

This is the only thing that you mentioned that may or may not have some merit because I cannot honestly speak on the house scene. I'll let those DJs speak for themselves.

this is how the DJ world is run, some get ahead b/c they have a gimmick/story and some make excuses why they are not going anywhere.

Again...you seem ill informed on the the "real" dj world. It's true that gimmicks or a great story contributes to not only a DJ's success but artists, actors and the like. However, the fact remains that at the end of the day, skill set, dedication to your craft and consistency are the makings of a real career and not the "flash-in-the-pan-i-just-wanna-be-in-the-spot light-if-only-for-the-moment -taking-up-space-fake DJ" that i speak of.

I am from NY so I am so surprised that you don't know who Beverly Bond is. DJ Beverly Bond -one of the dj's from the all star game who just happened to be a model before she became a dj -is a very capable dj -in fact she is considered to be one of the best in the game. She did not just start when dj's started on computers. She use to do a Legendary party back in 2001-2002 at Joes Pub in NY and she would come in every week with at least 10 crates of records. She has a huge following cause she is a great dj and she does not just rely on radio hits to rock a party. Bev has also been very vocal about how Black celebrities and music executives support and endorse white celebrity djs while treating capable Black djs like they are on the C-list. which is one of the reasons that these fake dj's are getting so much attention press and money. (read her article on Vibe Vixen- Fear of a Black DJ). http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=74092879&blogId=228485090
According to other posts that I read about the Allstar game the NBA required that the music be prerecorded for TV to avoid any mishaps. The other dj who was with Beverly was Sky Nellor who is also a well established dj ALTHOUGH there are HEAVY rumors that she has been faking her way through the game for a very long time. It is a shame that Beverly has to catch the negative press for doing her job. Even when you go back to the video the only one who is not in tune with the music is Sky. I am a huge fan of Bev Bond for how she represents females and how she tries to empower the next generation through her Black Girls Rock movement. Just wanted to make sure you had all your facts straight.

Nabs..........THANK YOU!!! You have been one of many of my Idols that I look up to as a Vet DJ and I've always wanted to learn more from you. Like when you did the tribute to Jam Master Jay @ Hard Rock Cafe, I can say there were about a good 5-10 dj's in the building and I bet you ask these Fake Dj's who's their Idol, I bet JMJ wouldn't be one of them. I commend you for writing this article and every word I agree with 1,000,000,000%. These "Fake Dj's" are just milking everything that i've worked for and taking food out of my Kids mouth's. Djing is my life and why should I have to battle with a "Fake DJ" when I know my skills up to par, but they get the gig because they would do it for cheaper.

Well damn Nabs! I thought I had covered some ground on this subject (http://sleepercellmixtape.squarespace.com/meandmydj/), but you took it there and back! Before I open my mouth, I must show my respect for cats like Nabs, including my influences like Chuck Chillout, Kool DJ Red Alert, Charlie Chase, Tony Tone, Grandmaster Flash, Jazzy Jeff, Kid Capri, Terminator X, Funkmaster Flex, Davy-D (Hollis Crew!!!), and of course Jam Master J! I could go on listing names of famous djs, but I think you know where I'm headed. I'm not trying to disrespect the cats trying to make an extra dollar during these hard times. However, I was waiting for someone with some real weight to step up and provide some confirmation of what I've been saying for a while now. I started spinning when people thought I was damaging the vinyl, and adults told me to STOP IT! So all the things that Nabs has talked about is true. When you spent that much time honing your craft, you kind of take it as a disrespect when someone who JUST bought their ipod mixer, beats you out of a $600 gig, by only charging $150. Buyers beware!!! You WILL get what you paid for! Spend all that money on liquor and the dance hall, and skimp on the music, and your party will be whack! Trust me, I've been called at the very last minute to rescue a party because people tried to save some money on the dj. When I arrived, everybody was in the parking lot listening to someone's bumpin car stereo. After they sent the $150 dj packing, well, you know what I had to do. Anyway, do the research, go to guitar center and ask for some cartridges so you can try out some 1200's. See how hard it is to mix, scratch, and beat juggle. Now imagine the confidence it takes to get busy in front of 5000 people....without making any mistakes. Fake dj's would never know, cause they are probably playing a pre-recorded mix. Like KRS-1 said, It's gotta be, "Live and Direct!" Nabs, you hit the nail on the head homie!!

I am glad someone cares enough to help young men realize that they do not have to chose street life because there is so much more out there. And with the right support you can go along way. I have two boys and I hope they never have to face the court system, but glad to know I have friend that would help them. Keep up the good work Luke Duke (Alton Lucas) and thanks for doing this story Nabs.
