Nabs: American DJ Story documentary -coming soon
Fashioned from his personal treasure trove of never-before-seen archival and behind-the-scenes footage, Nabs: American DJ Story chronicles one man's struggle as a true school DJ in a fickle and unforgiving industry as told thru the lives of famous friends and family.
IT’S BEEN A LONG ROAD…
…and I’m not just talking about the 20 years of vintage footage that make up the forthcoming documentary American DJ Story (ADJ). I’m also talking about DJing all over the country and abroad while at the same time hiring someone to capture it all on film. Drivers, road-managers, crew and sometimes extra talent like dancers or artists also have to be paid depending on the type of show I’m doing (Yes, I treat my DJ shows as a presentation every chance I get, that’s why It’s called “The DJ Nabs Experience”…more on that later).
When I’m home in between gigs, It’s usually production time and for most of this past year I’ve gone through quite the learning curve of teaching myself how to process and edit large High Definition video. I’ve read so much online about HD video that I felt like I was in college again without a real job. There are also times, when…In an effort to share the work load, additional editors are hired and as with anything digital these days, hard drives (which are a complete necessity) are constantly purchased as terabytes of footage have to be stored and backed up three times over.
Script rewrites and editing sessions with my partner Nicole Bentley are non stop and let’s not forget about the cost of websites, promo DVDs and computer programs that transcribe interviews for you. Now let’s factor in the time it takes to learn the program and then add in the frustration of going back to transcribing the interviews the old fashion way when the program just doesn’t work well enough to save you any real time. At this point you feel as if you wanna pull your hair out. Finally, there’s writers block, editors block, depleted funds, false promises, failed deals, missed deadlines, missed deadlines oh…and missed deadlines again.
Yeah…the independent filmmaker route is tough and It costs to be the boss… in more ways than one.
Let’s continue…it gets better.
Did I mention that in the midst of all this, for the last 7 months, I decided to train for an upcoming celebrity boxing match for charity with trainer extraordinaire, Xavier Biggs? Sure, I feel great now but the process in the beginning wore me out…totally!!!
(Pic below: my first month of training)
We don’t have a date yet for my upcoming amateur bout but be sure to check out Atlanta Corporate Fight Night on November 3rd, 2011 (a link for the website appears below this story). I will be supporting my gym by spinning the tunes between rounds and I may even do an exhibition in the ring.
(Pic below: several months later, 25lbs lighter and in fighting shape)
Right now as I write, I’m on the last 2 days of a 4 week tour of Europe and South Africa with Lil Jon (full recap blog coming later) and even though I have a slight motion sickness issue, my words come easily as I type while riding through France on this narrow tour bus.
Once I return, the work on American DJ story continues as well as all of my U.S. DJ gigs and my training. Most of all, I miss my wife Audra.
The good news is that this time away from home has given me renewed energy which I really needed. New deadlines are set and I believe that 2012 is the year we will be able to share ADJ with the world. Contrary to the title and what some people may think, this movie is not just about DJing. Just as the Matrix was about more than martial arts and Rocky more than boxing, ADJ is about perseverance, struggle, relationships and so much more. There’s a message that we hope to deliver through this project for generations to see and learn from, in addition to the visual history and stories that I was fortunate enough to accumulate.
