Durham Legend DJ N.A.B.S Celebrates 40 Years in Hip-Hop

Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) is excited to announce a special installment of our Rhythm & Reels summer concert series on July 13, 2024, from 6-8 p.m. at Rock Quarry Park. This event will feature a performance by Durham hip-hop legend DJ N.A.B.S in celebration of his 40th anniversary in hip-hop.

Internationally known as “the DJ who toured with Michael Jackson,” Youtha Fowler, professionally known as simply N.A.B.S, continues to demonstrate why he is one of the most prolific DJs of his time. In 2018, The GRAMMY Museum honored N.A.B.S in an exhibition, acknowledging his significant contribution to Atlanta’s music scene through his association with So So Def Record Label. Now, N.A.B.S joins the ranks as one of North Carolina’s Most Iconic Music Figures and Durham Parks and Recreation’s 2024 Homegrown Hero Award Recipient!

To make this celebration a night to remember, N.A.B.S is bringing along Miami bass hip-hop duo The 69 Boyz. The group, most known for their popular dance hit “Tootsee Roll,” is celebrating 30 years in hip-hop.

This milestone event is part of DPR’s Rhythm & Reels series, which offers free concerts and movies throughout the summer and fall. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of Durham Parks and Recreation, making this celebration even more special.

“This is a unique opportunity for the community to celebrate the rich history of North Carolina hip-hop and enjoy a fantastic evening of music,” said Alison Bender, Recreation Operations Supervisor. “Bimbe festivalgoers loved N.A.B.S. We are super excited to have one of our most recent Homegrown Hero recipients as part of the Rhythm and Reels series,” she added.

Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets or chairs. Food will be available from a selection of local on-site vendors. Please note that alcohol and smoking are not permitted at the event.
