Durham Legend DJ N.A.B.S Celebrates 40 Years in Hip-Hop Team Nabs Admin
Internationally known as “the DJ who toured with Michael Jackson,” N.A.B.S continues to demonstrate why he is one of the most prolific DJs of his time. Building an unprecedented career through his creative, innovative, and visionary work in the entertainment industry.
The Durham, NC native originally began his music career as a saxophonist in junior high. Later becoming drum major of the marching band in his junior and senior years at Durham High School. Further pursuing his musicianship while in the US Army’s 116th National Guard Band, playing in the big band, trio, quartet, and concert bands for over four years.
When N.A.B.S relocated to Atlanta, GA in 1988, he hit the turntables immediately in an official DJ battle for his stage name at Piedmont Park. DJ Nabs became a household name in Atlanta being one of the first DJ/radio personalities with his own branded radio show, In the Lab with DJ Nabs™. Which was one of the first hip- hop club nights in midtown Atlanta at the time. Legendary acts such as The Sugarhill Gang, Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, Jay-Z, and Questlove performing live. In the Lab with DJ Nabs trifecta was completed in 1998 with the release of his debut studio album of the same name on major recording label Columbia Records.
Over his career, N.A.B.S has collaborated with a roster of award-winning recording entertainers in radio, production, television, and tours. A short list of some of those artists include Kris Kross, Mariah Carey, Lil Jon, Ludacris, Kennan Thompson, Nick Cannon, Rickey Smiley, and many more.
In 2018, The Grammy Museum highlighted N.A.B.S in an exhibition, acknowledging his immense contribution to Atlanta’s music in association with So So Def Recordings. The hip-hop historian was a curator for the exhibition and sourced nearly 200 artifacts that were displayed.
The internationally recognized turntable instrumentalist has had an epic 40-year career and is embarking on the next chapter, Em City™World, a multi-media platform he co-founded in 2019. N.A.B.S is pioneering into the next frontier of music and production.
Most recently, NABS was received a proclamation from the City of Durham, naming May 16, 2024 as “DJ NABS Day.” The global icon was also honored as a 2024 Homegrown Here Honoree by the city as well. A full circle moment for himself and his family, being the first time he has been honored by and in his hometown during his 40th DJ anniversary.
Cheers to the living legend!
